Had first oil change at 1,000 miles. Now have 3,000 miles on car. Should I change oil again at 4,000 miles and then every 5,000 miles thereafter? The reason I had my oil change, free 1 oil change from dealer, at 1,000 miles is because there is always contamination from castings, dirt, etc. on a new engine. I will be using a well known oil and that oils manufacturer of its own oil filters (yes, I know, their oil filters are probably made by some other entity) But I want an oil folter with a cotton or synthetic media besides paper.

I took my brand new Saturn in, at 600 miles for the first oil change. I was headed out for a long road trip. They thought I was CRAZY!! But the car STILL runs great, and does not use a DROP of oil!!! Glad I had done that, for the VERY reasons you cited!!!

I change the oil and filter when the percentage reaches 50% on my 2020 Acadia and my 2022 Trax. It is usually close to 4000 miles. It is easy to remember when to change. May be overkill but that is just me. At 73 years old, with more vehicles owned than I can remember I have never had an engine fail me.
