DETROIT -- General Motors has axed the U.S. version of the Chevrolet Captiva Sport, ending a three-year run for the fleet-only small crossover.
GM built its last U.S. Captiva Sport in August, spokesman Jim Cain said. The company continues to make the crossover in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, for the Mexican market and for export.
The planned introduction of the Trax small crossover in early 2015 should absorb Captiva Sport demand and will give Chevy a three-crossover lineup, along with the compact Equinox and large Traverse.
The Captiva Sport, essentially a rebadged Saturn Vue, went on sale in the U.S. in the fall of 2011 for rental companies and other fleet customers. It was intended to free up capacity for the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain, which had been in short supply.
Captiva Sport sales peaked in 2013 at 47,600. GM sold 35,275 through October of this year, including just 32 last month as dealers phased out inventory.
Though intended only for fleet customers, the Captiva Sport found a following among retail customers on used lots as a less expensive alternative to the pricier Equinox.
So does that mean that GM is expecting the Trax to make a lot of fleet sales. GM says the Trax will replace the Captiva. If the Captiva was only being sold as a fleet vehicle, the Trax must be expected to fulfill some of the demand that it leaves behind.
I can see the Trax getting some good fleet sales volume, thinking about the type of fleets i've seen and what they require out of a vehicle, the Trax fits the bill.
What kind of companies would want a fleet of Traxs? I just can't think of a business that would really want Traxs in order to do their work, or at least Traxs specifically over other vehicles that could do the same job.
I know security companies like using smaller but capable vehicles like this, then there are those that require things more high output like a taurus interceptor. That's just to start.
Seems small for a cab. I feel like they would either go with a sedan or go bigger with something that is more like a van cab. The security car seems like a good match for the Trax though.
Perhaps in European cities, but we all know that Chevy doesn't sell in Europe anymore. I don't see where else it would sell. Are you talking about smaller American cities?
The Trax as a Chinese taxi? I don't see that happening, but it would be cool. Fingers crossed.
