2024 Trax catastrophic engine failure

I bought a 2024 Trax 1rs in Dec 2023. In may I had 3900 miles on it. Was driving on an express way. Went to accelerate and heard a pop bang sound in engine. Then black smoke poured out my exhaust. Everything started to shut down and the screen said to pull over. Oil was pouring out onto the pavement. I had the car towed to the nearest Chevy dealership. Here is what the service person told me:
"Hello sir per your request I put together a description of the failure that took place for the motor on your vehicle
It would seem that one of the engine piston rod bearings flew out of place and out of the motor at high enough force to create a hole in the motor causing the motor to have catastrophic engine failure. The vehicle will be getting a replacement motor covered under your factory warranty."

He told me they had one other Trax with the same problem already. He had no idea when they would have a replacement engine. A couple weeks later I went back to the dealership to get things out of my car. And it was just sitting there untouched. When I opened the door the cabin smelled like burnt oil. The car was covered in oil.
My brother who was a mechanic said the catalytic converter may need to be replaced. And probably the air filter to the cabin. When I asked the service guy about this, and asked if the car can be detailed and cleaned, he said no GM will only pay for an engine replacement.

My salesperson at a different dealership happened to call me a few days later. I told him what happened and asked if he could help. He spoke to their service manager. He said it's a minimum of 60 to 90 days to get a new engine from Korea. My salesman said they hadn't had it happen at their dealership yet, but I guess they did now since I bought from them. He said he knows all the dealerships around them had at least one with the same problem. He did say that they had another model Chevy recently have this happen on a test drive.

Has anyone else experienced this or heard of this on the 2024 Trax?

Hey ddsans I don't think it will go thru the the firewall. It seems everything is internal in the engine. It's not the engine exploding exactly it's the piston going thru the engine and tearing it up. I went to visit my car this weekend to look at the engine. It did not look like any damage from the top.
To prove this is true, I am attaching pics I took of the tag the state police put on the rear window as it was sitting dead on the side of the road. If you can read it, next week is two months. And attached pic of the safety ribbon they put on my side mirror. It made me sad.

Sheila you engine looks same as mine from below. If you look close you can see oil dripping from same spot still. Yours looks like taken right away mine is 2 mo later. Also included pics from top of engine. No noticable damage. Whatever that thing hanging next to ur filter is still intact on mine.

Well here’s my fantastic update.

A couple of weeks ago my husband and I drove around the dealership to see what was going on with my Trax. It was sitting there with a basin underneath and nothing done to it. You’d think they’d pull out the engine, clean off all the oil and have it ready for when the new engine arrived. Nope instead let’s just leave it baking in the sun.

Last week the dealership called and to say engine had arrived and that they were working on it. Friday I get a message saying sorry won’t be ready for pickup this weekend.

Well today I get a call from their technician that they had removed the engine and there is additional damage. That the water pump, vacuum pump and intake manifold all need to be replaced. Exactly why you’d think they would have removed the engine and looked my vehicle over from top to bottom to know exactly what needed to be fixed.

Lo behold these parts aren’t available at the warehouse and have to be ordered in from manufacturer.

At this point have nothing good to say about GM they F’ing suck!

I just traded in a 2024 trax with 23,000 flawless miles for a 2025. I noticed that the '24 took 5w30 engine oil and the '25 now calls for 0w20. I thought it strange that the '24 would take that "heavy" of an oil for a new DI turbo engine. I wonder if all these engine failures could be caused from the 5w30 and GM is now calling for 0w20. 🤔

Well my piston went right thru the engine and now I’ve been waiting over a month and they have no idea when one will become available. I can assure you this had nothing to do with my driving as my previous vehicle I owned for 17 years. The dealership stated in their words it was engine failure and basically engine exploded.

It took 3 months to get a replacement engine and all gaskets and seals needed. 2 days after getting the car back, the check engine light came on. It is now sitting at the original dealership (where I bought the car). This is the 3rd week it’s been there. A GM field engineer came out to inspect it last Friday. Awaiting a report.

I got the recall notice maybe a week after the engine blew up. The notice said there should have been warning notices which I never got while driving so I can't be sure if that's what caused it.
Did you purchase the extended warranty when you originally purchased your car?

My opinion, extended warranty's are a waste of money. Don't need it on a new car! If you have it on a used car, good luck using it. There's usually loopholes, they don't cover most things anyhow!

It all depends on the situation imo. If you are going to trade the car in before original warranty ends, then yeah, don't get one. But if you plan on to, or may possibly, keep the car past the original warranty, then it's a good idea to get one to have peace of mind and is definitely worth it if things go wrong. We had a Dodge Caliber that had the transmission go outside the original warranty. The extended warranty covered it all and we would have been screwed when it happened as money was tight at the time. Wife was happy that I pushed getting it when we bought it lol. Just my thoughts and everyone has to decide if they feel it's worth it or not.

The same thing happened to my daughter and her 2024Trax. I told her to buy a Honda or Toyota but she liked the look of the Trax. The initial ratings were good. Now she has a blown engine with 3500 miles on it. I had her file a report NHTSA. I am thinking of hiring a lemon law lawyer. If i dont get an engine in 30 days, i will goto BBB autoline or get a lawyer. After I flipped out on the service manager, they had a chevy Silverado for her to take as a loaner. They wont get that back until this is resolved one way or another. I have a feeling that this car is going to be a major problem for Chevy and they are going to alienante many first time car buyers. I hope GM does the right thing, but I have my doubts

I wonder if these catastrophic engine failures have anything to do with the recall for the stop start timing flaw?

If so, we should “hopefully” see them greatly reduced or ended completely.

About 9,000 miles on my 2024 now…..so far good. ( 50,0000 or 90,000 units sold so it does seem like a very small percentage)

These cars were sold knowing they had no replacement parts. I got my 2024 ACTIV on a Sat and discovered the rear driver side window didn't work. It was 5mos b4 the part arrived. Called Chevrolet and was given a case #. Found this forum on my own and discovered I wasn't alone! Compensated with an extended warranty & OnStar extension. Fast fwd 4 mos & I hit a deer on May 9th. The car has been at the body shop ever since. I have another case # and another case Mgr. My patience has run out! The case Mgr is doing all she can and I will be receiving some monetary compensation and some Reward points were added to my acct that I really could care less about. I found out today the dealerships knew prior to May 9th that parts were going to be an issue. They're hands are tied while the corporate personnel continue producing the cars knowing full well that many are rolling out needing replacement parts and/or if you have a collision you will not be able to get it repaired. I paid for mine in cash and have no car pymts and I'm very fortunate to have use of another car. Ins paid for 30 day rental and then I was on my own. I've had to continue to pay my insurance and the plates are due soon for $440. I've been waiting for a bumper cover now for all this time along with 9 others in this region. Chevrolet won't halt production or deal with this in the manner it should have been dealt with quite aways back. For ppl who have car pymts, and don't have another car to drive this is corporate greed at its best. I am very sorry I trusted them when I bought the car. I'm afraid to drive it when it ever gets done as I know there is no replacement parts. In addition to my own "inconvenience" as they call it and the apologies, the insurance adjustor with Progressive has been more informed and able to provide updates and information better than any of them in Chevrolet customer service. This open case isn't a win for them and the body shop has had to provide space in their facility all this time with no ETA or pymt either. Chevrolet doesn't care about the customers who purchased their cars as much as they care about selling a new one. This was an affordable car and probably and maybe a 1st car for many young ppl who have no recourse and now no car. I think a class action lawsuit or some media attention would be something many of us would be on board with. Idk how to be made whole. Trading it off would cost me a great deal and most likely would involve financing the difference on another car. I wish I'd never bought the car and share the resentment and exploitation of our misplaced trust with all the others in this same Trax nightmare.

You just made someone very happy making a '24 Trax available. I'm not certain, but the carry over engine in the '25 Equinox is the same engine that has had major oil consumption issues in the last few model years. One thing that is certain, the same engine in the Trax (1.2) is the same engine used in the Trail Blazer, and Buicks Invista an Encore GX ... those haven't had any issues outside of a CVT transmission issues on a limited of number of Trail Blazers concerning hardware issues.
